No rush to apply for academy status

0 Comments | Northern Echo, Jul 30, 2010 | by Joe Willis

ONLY a handful of the region’s top schools have applied to become academies – despite more than 30 expressing an interest.

Six schools in the NorthEast and North Yorkshire have submitted applications to the Department for Education to opt out of town hall control.

The schools have all been judged to be outstanding by Ofsted inspectors.

This means they could be fast-tracked to academy status by September.

The schools are Dyke House Sports and Technology College, in Hartlepool; Shotton Hall School, in Peterlee, County Durham; Meadowdale Middle School, in Bedlington, Northumberland; Whitburn School, in Whitburn, Sunderland; and Archbishop Holgate’s School and Manor School, both in York.

Last month, the Government revealed that 33 outstanding schools in the region were among more than 1,700 nationally which had expressed an interest in becoming an academy.

A further 26 schools not regarded as outstanding also asked for more information.

In Darlington, four of the town’s secondary schools had expressed an interest – Carmel College, Hurworth Comprehensive, Darlington Education Village and Longfield School.

However, none has so far applied to become academies.

Ian Mowbray, who retired as headteacher of Shotton Hall at the end of the summer term, said last month that while the school had been well-supported by the local authority, becoming an academy would lead to more money to take it forward.

Nationally, only 153 schools have applied to become academies, despite the Government earlier claiming more than 1,000 had submitted applications.

Last night, Labour’s shadow children and education secretary, Ed Balls, criticised Education Minister Michael Gove for using emergency procedures to push through the Academies Bill.

He said: “Michael Gove must explain why he rushed this Bill and misleadingly claimed that more than one thousand schools had applied.

“It seems tome that the real reason for the rush was to avoid proper scrutiny for a deeply flawed piece of legislation.”

Outstanding schools which have applied to become academies are pre-approved in all but the most exceptional circumstances, a spokesman for the Department for Education said last night.

It would then be down to the schools when they wished to transfer out of local authority control, he added.

Ex-convict found guilty of murder for stabbing man to death near

0 Comments | Pasadena Star – News, May 21, 2010 | by Nathan McIntire

PASADENA – A jury on Friday convicted an unemployed ex-convict of second-degree murder for stabbing a man to death outside the Hill Avenue Branch library last year.

Steven Sumner, 46, will be sentenced June 22 for stabbing James Calvin “Caveman” Hall Jr. to death after a confrontation near Pasadena City College on Apr. 20, 2009. Sumner told police that he committed the stabbing but claimed he acted in self defense.

Prosecutor Alice Kurs said the verdict returned by the jury of eight women and four men was “a just result.”

“He approached an unsuspecting victim with a weapon and took his life,” Kurs said. “Mr. Hall did not deserve to die that day in front of the library where he was sitting with a friend, unsuspecting.”

Prosecutors said Sumner and his 43-year-old “drinking buddy” Patrick Mason searched out Hall after an altercation between Hall and Mason at a 99 Cent store earlier that day.

Hall was known to hang out near the Hill Avenue library and Sumner and Mason rode their bikes there to find him. After a brief verbal confrontation, Sumner pulled out a knife and stabbed Hall twice in the abdomen.

The two then rode off on their bikes as Hall stumbled and tried to find help

These measurement help determine how much

Sat ,31/07/2010

These measurement help determine how much corneal tissue will need to be reshaped to give you the best possible outcome after surgery. Wearing contact lenses up to the day of your baseline exam may cause inaccurate measurements to be taken and this can result in inaccurate changes made to your vision. There’s no way you want this to happen, so listen to your surgeon’s recommendations if he or she asks you to stop wearing your contacts prior to your exam.

Need help in choosing which Lasik Eye Surgeon to pick? See Choosing Your Lasik Eye Surgeon for help in researching, questioning and selecting the best surgeon. The goal of your initial consultation and baseline exam is to help you and your surgeon determine if you are a good candidate for Lasik surgery. Your Lasik surgeon will discuss the medical history of your eyes with you and will also ask you about your general medical history.

Topics your Lasik surgeon will discuss with you:

when did you first began wearing glasses or contacts

do you have any history of eye injuries

have you had any reoccurring eye infections

do you have frequent headaches, blurred vision or double vision

what current medications are you taking (both prescription and non prescription medication as they may be important to your vision)

what are the possible risks of having Lasik surgery

what are the non-surgical alternatives to Lasik surgery

what questions do you have regarding your upcoming surgery

signing the informed consent form for Lasik surgery (signed agreement between you and your surgeon that you understand the risks, benefits and alternatives of your procedure)

do you have any long term, chronic, medical conditions that could affect the long term health of your eyes

are you pregnant or nursing

Don?t feel pressured to sign the informed consent form for Lasik surgery until you feel confident and comfortable with your surgeon.

Schultz found himself

Sat ,31/07/2010

Schultz found himself infatuated with the vibrant coffee culture of Italy. While in nearby Verona, Schultz had his first caffe? latte? and, as he observed the cafe patrons chatting and laughing joyously while sipping their coffees in the elegant surroundings, inspiration struck.

In what he describes as an epiphany, the idea hit him, “why not create community gathering places like the great coffee house of Italy in the United States?” he wondered. This idea would place Starbucks coffee history into the annuls of business journals for decades to come.

However, his idea was not well received by Baldwin as he wasn?t too keen on getting into the restaurant business and distracting him from his original plan of selling whole beans. But he did let him test a small espresso bar in the corner of one of the stores.

Allow people to

Sat ,31/07/2010

Allow people to ask questions and voice concerns, and be realistic and honest in your responses.

#2: Building trust is crucial, so avoid speaking in absolutes

unless you are positive that current conditions are stable. After a round of post-merger layoffs, one vice president prematurely announced that there would be no more job losses. A few weeks later, when additional redundancies became apparent, several more people were let go, creating distrust of the management team and (inaccurate) rumors about further cuts to come.

#3: Be sensitive to individuals or groups that may see themselves as losing something

because of the change, such as authority, influence, advancement potential, or status. Talk to people about their anxieties and seek ways to communicate their value to the organization now and in the future.

HOT FROCKS

0 Comments | Daily Post; Liverpool (UK), Jul 24, 2010 | by Anonymous

SUMMER isn’t all about shorts, flimsy dresses and flip-flops. While the sun’s often a catalyst to shed stuffy clothing and go casual, high summer is also chock-a-block with occasions to go all out in the glamour stakes, thanks to hats, fascinators and stunning dresses.

If your postman is groaning under the weight of invites, you may feel your wardrobe is suddenly in short supply, so give your dress- to-impress credentials a boost and invest in a fabulous frock or sassy suit to see you through the sunshine months.

Take the catwalks for inspiration who bypassed recession doom and gloom to deliver an explosion of occasionwear-perfect prints and colours.

GARDEN PARTY NEVER underestimate the changeable British weather. Unexpected showers don’t only fall in April, so if you’re off to a Pimms and strawberries gettogether, echo your garden surroundings with a blooming gorgeous floral frock but play it safe and layer on a girly mac.

A classic Panama hat, as sported by Sienna Miller, will give a cute dress a touch of instant edgy cool and rescue bad hair days if you’ve received an unexpected invite and skipped the blow dry.

TRY Great Plains Tulip Tree mac, pounds 85; Goodwood Lady Louisa Panama hat by Cozmo Jenks, pounds 150.

FAMILY GRADUATION WHILE your beloved is trussed up in their gown and cap, your job is to look as proud as punch. Observe the air of formality with a tailored suit jacket you can pair with a matching skirt or pretty print dress. You could show them just how dotty you are about their degree achievements with polka spots.

Once the ceremony is over and caps have been thrown into the air, you can take off your jacket and join in with the champagne and celebrations in style.

TRY Alexon tie front jacket, pounds 130; Kaliko Everyday Couture by Suzannah Crabb spot chiffon dress, pounds 150.

RACE MEET WHEN WAGs like Coleen Rooney start wearing demure frocks, you know that flashing the flesh at the races is most definitely over.

An elegant knee length shift is the ideal shape to show off your figure but keep your shoulders and legs coquettishly covered up.

You aren’t race-ready until you’ve topped off your outfit with headwear -fascinators in the shape of dramatic hats will give you a modern look.

And if the going is soft? Ensure heels can walk on grass without sinking or all bets will be off on you being able to last the course

Too little, and

Thu ,29/07/2010

Too little, and every noise in the room will sound dead and flat, as if all the air had been siphoned away when no one was looking.

Finding the perfect balance between the two is simple: just pad the walls. Reverb is created by sound waves hitting hard, flat surfaces, then bouncing off and into each other. A certain amount of that is desired, but too much will completely distort the room?s inherent sound qualities and ruin your recording. So instead of giving the sound something to bounce off of, give it something to sink into. Pad largely offensive surfaces with material meant for cushioning; egg boxes are perfect for this, but even covered fiberglass will do the trick.

But be forewarned: too much padding, and you?ll accidentally achieve what?s known as complete absorption, or the deadening of a room. If you?ve eliminated every surface, the room is

only

absorbing sound, not reflecting even a comfortable amount. You?ll need to create absorption in the areas where the reverb is overly offensive; you can figure this out by blasting your favorite record and listening for the muddiest areas of the room.
